Story Time and Garden Work with School Children
This special activity often becomes the highlight of the trip for many people, and there’s a reason for it.
In early 2024, GTGR completed construction on the largest public elementary school in the country. They did so, in the smallest community they could find. This particular village called Sembeun Tabema, is at the end of the road in every sense. It’s impossible to drive any deeper than this village. There is no electricity, and no radio or cell phone service for miles.
You will experience a mix of emotions when visiting a place like this. Especially when met with the opportunity to improve on the lives of the next generation growing up here.
Spend the whole school day with these children, ages 4-12. Help them practice English through break off groups and small discussions. Or, engage in story time as a big group. The children at GTGR’s school have never left the small community. Share stories of the world and inspire them to create goals and dreams of their own.
Grow food with the teacher and children in the school garden. Help teach the children the importance of modern agriculture practices, such as those used on the GTGR farm and women’s farms.
Wrap up the day with a soccer game against the children. Don’t feel discouraged, but they will beat you!
