Farm Work with GTGR
Growing the Grassroots is a non-profit organization operating in Sierra Leone. They have engaged in many projects, from creating scholarships for children to building a school, to renovating the town church. But their focus is agriculture education at the highest level. They are the largest agricultural producer in Tikonko town. Over the past 3 years, 100+ women have graduated their year-long class, which covers both practical and theoretical lessons throughout the year.
With a newly cleared 5-acre farm, GTGR plans to increase its volume of students to accommodate the high demands for education. But they need your help. Paying and feeding all these students is costly, and GTGR needs to turn a profit on this farm to sustainably grow.
At any given time of the year, there is a multitude of ways service workers will prove to be extremely valuable. During times of planting, you will be asked to plant cash crops- such as pineapple, peanuts, corn, and sweet potatoes. The assistance of service workers will allow for free labor, and higher amounts of land being planted for the season. Every additional seed sown, turns into money that GTGR will be able to invest back into its students.
During times of harvest you may help to weigh, dry, shuck, and sell the crops. The importance of service workers in this stage is critical. Without the help of service workers, there is not enough labor to process the harvested crops. Processing foods such as peanuts into peanut butter, corn into flour, and tomatoes into paste, is still uncommon practice in many places. Help create these byproducts which sell for more money, and have longer shelf lives.
