“Being able to develop these villages and better these people’s lives first hand has changed my life. It meant the world to me when I was able to go out to Sierra Leone February 2024. It is a life-changing experience that will give you a whole new perspective. As someone who is always looking for ways to help those around me, I’ve had my fair share of volunteer opportunities, and this soars above them all; it’s hard to put it into words. Our biggest project yet was the school in Sebehum Tabema. It not only motivated children to learn by providing them with a safe and beautiful work environment, but I believe it also shed some light and hope among the community. I think the village feels seen and heard which makes them excited for what the future holds, and the school brought them together for an extraordinary ceremony. This ceremony was hands down the best experience of my life; I couldn’t then and I still can’t now express my feelings in words, it just comes out in tears and smiles. Calvin planned our trip perfectly; he seems to know all the right people, and he has great relationships with them all. I always felt safe, productive, and eager for the next adventure. You learn so much out there from everyone you meet and everywhere you go, and Cal knows exactly how to optimize the experience."

"The work we’ve done in Sierra Leone means more to me than any other service project I've been a part of. Unlike other service opportunities where you don’t get to see your contribution firsthand, we are on the ground, holding hands with the people we’re helping, sharing meals with them, dancing with them—Its truly indescribable. We built a primary school in one of the most remote villages of Sierra Leone. We were able to contribute to generations of growth and education. Calvin’s expansive knowledge of Sierra Leone and their culture takes a lot of the stress out of traveling there. He’s widely loved by the locals and his time spent there makes him an incredible guide.”

"I had the opportunity twice now to go out to Sierra Leone and each time has been an experience of a lifetime. For me it was a trip back home because of the two years I served in Sierra Leone as a missionary but what made it so life changing for me was the group I was with and the work we were there to do. Being there with Calvin was excellent company because of the knowledge he brought with him. He knew so many of the cultures and history that I hadn't learned even after two years of living in the country. He also knew so many local leaders and individuals that I could tell respected him. We worked right beside each other for many of the projects while we were there and I got a glimpse into his vision for the country and himself. He is a doer and a visionary. He can see the outcome before it happens and knows what to do to achieve his goals. I felt very safe and comfortable even while being in such remote places with him knowing we would have to rely on our instincts to decide what to do. I would gladly go back to Sierra Leone with Calvin and I know that it would be another experience of a lifetime."

“I was able to visit in February 2024 for the opening of the school in Sembehun Tabema. It was the most amazing experience to celebrate with all of the families in the village. There is no doubt this school is going to be a game changer for the future of the village and their kids. Calvin is the best guide in Sierra Leone that you could ask for. He knows the country and culture so well and has a great relationship with many of the locals. He ensured that all of us had a comfortable experience while seeing the many beautiful places of Sierra Leone. Can’t wait to visit again!"

"Growing the Grassroots is having significant and lifelong impacts on so many deserving people in Sierra Leone. Kim and I traveled with the Board in April 2024 to witness and participate in the opening of a new primary school - the largest in Sierra Leone - in the community of Sembeun Tabema. It was unbelievable! First, the simple fact that this young organization was able to bring this project to fruition is nothing short of amazing, especially given all the roadblocks that more often than not derail such ambitious plans. The school alone has changed the trajectory for the residents of this end-of-the-path rural village. But the impacts do not stop there. From educating the youth and giving them hope and opportunity to providing villagers with knowledge and life skills to sustain themselves to building community by showing them love, compassion and a faith in humanity. Growing the Grassroots is planting seeds of grain, faith and greatness that is producing food, favor and friendship. And, the best of all, their greatest days still lie ahead of them. Give a man a fish and feed him for a day, teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
